Foley artist

1- What is a Foley artist?
A Foley Artist 'recreates' sound effects for film, television and radio productions on a Foley Stage in a post production studio.
2- Who was Foley?
Jack Donovan Foley was the developer of many sound effect techniques used in filmmaking. He is credited with developing a unique method for performing sound effects live and in synchrony with the picture during a film's post production.
3- Why are Foley artists needed? Give examples of why Foley artists might be needed.
Foley artists are needed to give a higher quality sound effect for many tasks including punching and walking, simple sounds that are made to sound better or in case the natural sound from when filming is too quiet.
4- Give examples of how Foley artists traditionally achieved their outcomes.
Foley originally added the footsteps, the movement, the sound of various props-all in one track. He used a cane as an adjunct to his own footsteps. With that he could make the footsteps of 2/3 people. He kept a large cloth in his pocket which could be used to simulate movement.
5- How is Foley work completed nowadays?
You project the movie in a studio and one or two people actually perform the sound effects to the picture. The sound effects are recorded live and are used in the final movie.
