Book of Eli opening

                                  Book of Eli opening scene

In the opening scene of 'The Book of Eli you can clearly see that it's going to be a post apocalyptic film when it has a slow tracking shot of a desolate are with no-one around until the camera passes a gun and then gets to a dead body. This shows there is a lot of death and decay around. You can also hear a cat approaching the dead body, however as it swipes past the body again you can see the cat eating the dead body. This instantly gives the audience a idea of the aftermath of the apocalypse as you don't normally see a cat in the woods eating a human. After that it slowly uses a panorama and shows the main character,Eli, laying down holding a bow and arrow with a gas mask on. The use of a gas mask gives the audience of a war that has caused the apocalypse as these masks originated in World War 1. As it shows Eli holding this bow with steady hands - although you wouldn't think much of this, it actually tells the audience that Eli is not a cannibal as cannibals typically have shaky hands. This tells the audience how strong Eli is as even cats have resorted to eating humans. The other thing you can notice is that throughout the whole opening scene there's no credits, this shows how focused on getting into film the produces were.

Costumes

               Costumes + examples in different genres.

In different sort of genres, different costumes are used to fit the stereotypes. Below are 3 famous genres with the stereotype costumes.

Western

In western film the stereotypical costume for the main characters tends to be someone in western books, black trousers, white shirt with sometimes a waist coat. Below is a example;

Post apocalyptic

In the stereotypical post apocalyptic film characters tend to have tattered clothes that are perhaps a bit loose as there is no shops open to buy new clothes, you have to take what you can find. Some examples are bellow:

Action

In a typical action film there are many typical costumes for the leading character. For example in the superhero films the main character, the superhero(s), normally have a unique 'superhero costume', for example Batman;

Post apocolyptic storyboard (in order)

Foley artist

1- What is a Foley artist?
A Foley Artist 'recreates' sound effects for film, television and radio productions on a Foley Stage in a post production studio.
2- Who was Foley?
Jack Donovan Foley was the developer of many sound effect techniques used in filmmaking. He is credited with developing a unique method for performing sound effects live and in synchrony with the picture during a film's post production.
3- Why are Foley artists needed? Give examples of why Foley artists might be needed.
Foley artists are needed to give a higher quality sound effect for many tasks including punching and walking, simple sounds that are made to sound better or in case the natural sound from when filming is too quiet.
4- Give examples of how Foley artists traditionally achieved their outcomes.
Foley originally added the footsteps, the movement, the sound of various props-all in one track. He used a cane as an adjunct to his own footsteps. With that he could make the footsteps of 2/3 people. He kept a large cloth in his pocket which could be used to simulate movement.
5- How is Foley work completed nowadays?
You project the movie in a studio and one or two people actually perform the sound effects to the picture. The sound effects are recorded live and are used in the final movie.

Costumes in preliminary task.

Costumes

In my preliminary task we're basing it on a suspenseful film based in both a tense and natural setting of the woods and a unnatural and tense setting of a interrogation room. We thought that rather using a set look in the costume area we would just use a natural look. This is to make the prelim task seem the most realistic we can as in a murder the suspects and victim aren't going to be dressed up they'll be in natural clothes.

Costumes are used in a variety of films including 'The book of Eli' ,a film we've been studying a lot, they show a post apocalyptic film with a variety of characters who all wear similar costumes.
in the photo above you can see both the main characters wearing baggy clothes that's too big for them with glasses to protect their eyes from the sun.

This shows that theirs certain stereyotypes for different film genres as its also similair costumes in 'The Road' another post apocolyptic film we've studied closely.
